Jiu-jitsu works for people of every size, because leverage beats strength. Here it is taught self-defense first, with a set series of lessons from your very first day.

You will not be thrown to the wolves.

Master Wald teaches from a set series of lessons. Each class starts by reviewing the skills you have already learned, then adds the next ones, with every technique broken into parts, demonstrated, explained and drilled. He keeps track of where each student is, so no time is wasted and nothing gets skipped.

New students start in beginner classes with no sparring. As you move through the curriculum you join intermediate and advanced classes, and live rolling comes when you are ready for it, not on day one.

Self-defense comes first

Sport jiu-jitsu is about points. The fundamentals here are about what happens when nobody taps and nobody is refereeing: what to do in an argument, how to be ready for a sucker punch or a kick, how to escape a choke or a headlock. Then the art opens up, and you learn to handle a skilled partner on the ground.

Built for real bodies

Our adult students include teenagers, parents, surgeons, veterans and people starting in their 40s and 50s. Many come in with bad shoulders, knees or backs. One student wrote that after 60 classes he had not been injured once. Women who were nervous to start find that size and strength are not what decides who wins.

Mornings and evenings

Adult classes run in the morning and the evening, so jiu-jitsu fits around work. Ask us which classes fit your week when you book your free class.

He has a set series of lessons that a student can expect to progress through. Each session will begin with a review of the specific skills previously learned. After that review, new skills will be added. No time is wasted.

I was hesitant because of my past injuries. So far I have completed 60 classes and not once have I injured myself. Constantly learning something new. A human chess game, I love it.

As a female, I was intimidated to start, but realized I needed to learn some self-defense. Everything I have learned is very applicable to real world situations. Size and strength are not key factors.

Part of the fundamental classes here is how to protect yourself in real situations where you can't tap out and there isn't a ref there to stop the fight.

Master Wald convinced me to give BJJ a try. That was 6 months ago. Shoulder and back problems have pretty much gone away. In a few months I'll be a blue belt.

Wald's classes have been the most effective and meaningful treatment for my post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. I am so fortunate to have found this place.

We make the drive all the way up from West Palm 2 to 3 times a week. The gym feels like a family when you walk in.

Questions

Before you
walk in.

I have never trained. Is jiu-jitsu right for a beginner?

Yes. Beginners start in beginner classes with no sparring, and the lessons are built in order. You never have to figure it out on your own.

I am older and have old injuries. Can I still train?

Many of our students started in their 40s and 50s with shoulder, knee or back problems. Classes are controlled and progressive, and live sparring is never rushed.

Is this sport jiu-jitsu or self-defense?

Self-defense comes first: real attacks, real escapes. From that foundation you learn the full art of jiu-jitsu.

Is it good self-defense for women?

Jiu-jitsu is built on leverage and technique rather than size and strength, which is why it works so well for women. Several of our female students say it is the best decision they made.

When are adult classes?

There are morning and evening classes. When you book your free class, we will help you find the ones that fit your schedule.

What do I wear to my first class?
